The Fly (2014, Olly Williams)
The Fly (2014, Olly Williams) was one of my least favourite short films to watch. I found it extremely cringe-worthy and irritating, with absolutely no redeeming qualities about the main character. We are aligned with a man waiting outside in the escape vehicle for a bank robbery, and are positioned to grow fond of the fly in his car annoying him, but I just didn't think in this way at all, instead I was just waiting for it to end.
There are a wide range of shots used, which did keep it visually interesting to watch, but narratively it lacked. I understand there is only so much you can do with a man being annoyed at a fly, but for a dark comedy it really wasn't entertaining for me. The close ups of him anxiously tapping his thumbs, side-angle shots of him checking his mirrors and mid-shots of his facial expressions, all interrupted by extreme close ups of the fly were interesting for a while, but after the first few 'loops' of this series of shots, it became increasingly predictable and unfunny. You knew the next thing he would do to try and get rid of the fly was going to be even more ridiculous than the last, that you grew to expect it and it just lost that comedic element.
